Classic & Sports Car|June 2017KALORAMA FÊTES RED TRIANGLEAlvis was the featured marque at the 61st Royal Automobile Club of Victoria Rally at the Kalorama Recreation Reserve, Australia on 26 March. The local branch of the Alvis Car Club brought a fine selection of 1920s and ’30s examples, including assorted 12/50s and a gorgeous Speed 20 SA tourer. Later models featured, too, it being 50 years since the last car left the Holyhead Road factory, Coventry. As C&SC contributor and show regular Heinz Schendzielorz pointed out: “The gathering has been run in the Dandenongs – just outside Melbourne – continually since 1956. It’s probably one of the oldest continuing events in Victoria, attracting 300 vehicles – cars and ’bikes.”All proceeds go to the Kalorama fire brigade: this year an excellent Aus$6000.” The Mystery Tour is well-subscribed; for 2017…2 min

Classic & Sports Car|June 2017Simon Taylor FULL THROTTLE‘With four victories, plus three seconds and four thirds, he is the Brickyard’s most successful driver’ Dynasties in motorsport are nothing new. Our current World Champion Nico Rosberg is, of course, the son of Keke, Champion in 1982; but Damon Hill, son of double World Champion Graham, ticked that box 20 years ago. Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve and the Brabhams, Jack and his three sons, also spanned two generations. The Rodríguez brothers, Pedro and Ricardo, are among many memorable racing siblings, and Stirling Moss’ sister Pat was as good a rally driver as she was a horsewoman. There have been three generations of racing Andrettis – Mario, Michael and Marco – and in NASCAR the Petty clan spanned four generations, from Lee via Richard and Kyle to Adam, Lee’s great-grandson,…4 min

Classic & Sports Car|June 2017SHOWDOWN ON THE SALT FLATS‘IT WAS THE LONGEST, HEAVIEST LSR VEHICLE UNTIL THRUST SSC SOME 60 YEARS HENCE’ One was owlish, the other plump – think popular schoolmaster and prosperous merchant banker. Yet these unassuming British gents with a strong sense of duty fought a fierce but friendly battle far from the home fires of Blighty to be the fastest man on Earth. They succeeded in this endeavour on six occasions – three apiece – and in one remarkable 24-hour period in September 1938 swapped this singular honour twice. In doing so, they raised the Land Speed Record from 300mph to 400mph in 10 years from 1937 – and did so in spectacular cars that were spectacularly different. Captain George Eyston’s Thunderbolt was an eight-wheel behemoth; John Cobb’s Railton Special was a 4WD lightning…12 min
Classic & Sports Car|June 2017MICHELIN MINI BOOTSMICHELIN XZX 145/70SR12 £70.80 including delivery 01302 711123; www.longstonetyres.co.uk With the introduction of the bigger disc brakes on the 1275GT in 1974, British Leyland started to move away from its traditional cute little 10in rims, and instead began fitting 145/70 boots onto 12in wheels. For some considerable time now, it has been tricky for owners to find suitably sized – and decent quality – off-the-shelf tyres to complement the handling of these sporty and fun little cars that are such an endearing part of the British motoring culture. The good news is that a tyre-maker has finally stepped up to the plate and Michelin is filling the gap with the reintroduction of its period-style 145/70SR12 XZX. Classic & Sports Car|June 2017Eclectic bunch at NECThe highest price at Classic Car Auctions’ sale on 1-2 April went to a BMW M635CSi. The two-owner 15,000-mile 1985 coupé fetched a monumental £100,100, making a very smart white 46,800-mile 635CSi automatic look fine value at £31,900 and a 1980 manual a bargain at £8250. Rarities at the event included a 1965 Citroën 2CV Sahara that sold for £68,200, a 1992 Panther Solo (one of 25 built) that made £18,700, and a Renault 17 Gordini. The fastback looked fantastic in bright green but needed work; it went for £7150. Other highlights included a 20,000-mile Mazda MX-5 (£8580) and 1969 Lotus Elan +2 that was very affordable at £10k. There was also a 1972 Mercedes 280SE 3.5 that had been with the same owner for 41 years, having been won…1 min
